A home battery is not always a “set and forget” appliance. The settings that suit your home today may need to change as your electricity tariff, season, household consumption, network conditions or backup priorities change.

The right settings balance savings, backup and battery care

The setting that delivers the highest saving at one moment is not automatically the best overall setting. Charging and discharging patterns, minimum state of charge (SOC) and backup reserve can affect how much stored energy remains available during an outage and how the battery is used over time.

Why battery settings may change

Your battery can respond differently depending on what you want it to achieve. A household focused on evening self-consumption may need a different schedule from a customer using a time-of-use tariff, a free-power window or a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

  • Electricity tariff: peak, off-peak and controlled charging periods can influence when the battery should charge or discharge.
  • Free-power windows: some plans offer a limited period of very low-cost or free electricity, which may make scheduled grid charging useful.
  • Seasonal solar production: the balance between solar charging and grid charging can change between summer and winter.
  • Household consumption: EV charging, heating, cooling or new appliances can change the best operating strategy.
  • Backup preference: keeping a larger reserve provides more energy for an outage, while a lower reserve may make more capacity available for daily use.
  • VPP participation: a VPP may control parts of the battery’s operation under its program rules, so the tariff, VPP terms and backup expectations should be considered together.

What should be configured at installation?

Commissioning should do more than simply confirm that the battery turns on. The installer should confirm that the system communicates correctly, the meter and CT readings make sense, charging and discharging operate as intended, and the initial operating mode reflects the customer’s tariff and backup priorities.

The customer should also understand the important settings visible in the app, including the minimum SOC or backup reserve, any charging schedule and how changes may affect day-to-day performance.

What may need attention later?

Future optimisation is different from initial commissioning. A new electricity plan, changed free-power period, VPP enrolment, seasonal consumption shift or different backup preference may justify reviewing the operating schedule. The best setting should be based on the current household—not simply copied from another system.
